Larry Marler opened the meeting at 7 PM, for our club, the Gem State Metal Detecting Club meeting, in the back room at the Idaho Pizza Company at 405 E. Fairview, in Meridian.

At 7:02, Larry Marler lead the Pledge of Allegiance

Then at 7:05, Larry asked the club to welcome Davey Allen who gave a short presentation about Pinpointers or Pin Pointers as some people say. Davey displayed his bandoleer of different kinds of Pin Pointers and discussed the good and bad ones he has used. Discussed were the:

  • Whites THX’s – Good pin-pointers, good ground penetration 5” +, and multi modes of operation.
  • Garrett Pro-Pointer – An older generation pin-pointers, (2 generations back), good ground penetration 3-4”+
  • The all-famous GP pointer – A Garrett clone, very weak ground penetration 1-2”
  • An un-banded pin-pointer – Which gave the same performance as the GP, except it has a multi-mode feature

Davey discussed learning how your pinpointer works with coins and junk metal like pop tabs and foil by using Air Separation, and then seeing how it works in the real ground. He also discussed lightly tapping the ground with your pinpointer as to scrapping. Continued scrapping will wear out the tip and may push dirt into any cracks or holes that develop, causing the pin-pointer to slowly fail. Light tapping will allow you to center on a target and not damage the tip of your pin-pointer.

Davey said pin-pointers cost from $5.00 one from a gun show (GP Kind), to the GP, about $18.00 on eBay, Garrett Pro Pointer, Original cost $74.00 to the White’s THX’s $160.00

A couple of members talked about the pin-pointers they were using and were happy with. These were upper-end Fisher and Garrett’s.

You can talk with Richie Rich Mining Supplies and Gerry’s Metal Detectors about the different pin-pointers they sell. Also, American Digger Magazine has some reviews of current pin-pointers

There were test pots to try pin-pointers in and see how it looks through the local soil and detects targets. There was a Test Trough with a Penny, Dime, Nickel, Quarter, Half-Dollar, and Dollar to Air Test and Evaluate their pin-pointers on too.

Targets in pots were a Penny and a piece of Foil at 2 inches, a Dime at 3 inches, a Nickel at 4., a Quarter at 5 inches, a Half-Dollar at 6 inches, and an Ike Dollar at 6 inches.

The raffle for the Garrett Carrot (new model), was held after the pin-pointer presentation. Larry stirred the tickets and Davey pulled the winning ticket. The Winner was Rob Johnson. See his smiling face in the picture below.

There were 3 Raffles;

  1. Silver Dollar: A 1921 Peace Dollar – Winner was Sarah Lindstrom
  2. A Mystery Prize/Box – Winner was Diana Baird
  3. And the profit sharing 50/50 – Winner was Al Anderson – This was Al’s first night as a Club member.

A raffle was held for a “Finds Table”: 1908 Barber Quarter – Winner was Ron Baird.

GSMDC July 2021 Newsletter

The monthly Club meeting was held on July 15 at 7 PM on the third Thursday of the month, at the Idaho Pizza Company in Meridian.

Twenty-six people attended the meeting and ate pizza/salads and drank until their shirt buttons popped.

Before opening the meeting, most attendees bought raffle tickets for the Silver Dollar, a quality digging tool and pouch, and the all-time favorite 50/50 drawings. Several people displayed their “Finds” on the finds table for everyone to view.

After the flag opening by Larry Marlar, there was a presentation by Davey Allen on the Metal Detector Manufactures in business today and recent changes to some American Manufactures. The big change was White’s Electronics selling out its White’s line of detectors to Garrett Electronics. The repair of Whites detectors now falls to Centreville Electronics.

The most asked question in all of Metal Detecting, NO not ‘Where is the closest bathroom?’, was asked – “What is the Best Metal Detector for ME?”

Simple answer – the one that works for your style of Metal Detecting and you are comfortable operating.

Discussion centered around how to determine that one detector that “fits you like a glove”. Most agreed, by trying several different detectors to see if you need/want all the features each detector provides.

1. Think about what you want to use the Metal Detecting for – Coin Shooting, Relic Hunting, Gold Prospecting. Read about how other people use their Metal Detectors or watch some YouTube videos on how you use a Metal Detector and how much work is involved using one. You will most likely change your mind a couple of times. Don’t worry, that is normal.

2. Have a friend demonstrate how their Metal Detecting works and try it out a few times.

3. Come to different Club outings and try a few other club members’ Metal Detectors to see if you need all the Bells and Whistles! More Bells and Whistles mean more money!

4. Try out the model of Metal Detectors you think you want over several outings before you buy.  Ask questions, ask questions, ASK QUESTIONS!!!!

5. Try to find a Metal Detector seller that provides training with a new detector purchase and can provide support for small problems and a way to help you get help from the manufacturer.

See more on the Manufactures attachment below.

There were three raffles and there were many smiles from the winners.

Raffle 1 – Was for a slightly used 1882 Morgan Silver Dollar, won by Sherry Allen

Raffle 2 – Who could not use a Hand Made Probe/Digging Tool, with a pouch. This prize was made by club member Bill Killian and the winner was smiling ear to ear.

Raffle 3 – Was our beloved 50/50 and the winner made enough to buy several pizzas for the next few meetings.

Another activity was the “Finds ” Table Raffle led by Rob Johnson. Several people bought items they had found and were entered into a drawing for an IKE Dollar.

Some of the Finds were described by their “finders” and then a winner was drawn. The winner(s) had big smiles also.

On Saturday 24 July, Larry Marler led an outing at the old Nampa High School on Lake Lowell Ave. The outing was so that people could ask questions, practice their skills with their Metal Detectors, pinpointers, and how to extract their targets by using the probe technique. There also was a seeded area in the Quad area behind the gym, that everyone could try their hand at finding and retrieving targets. Several Buffalo and Shield nickels and some dimes & quarters were retrieved. Lots of Stinkin Lincolns were also found. The big find of the day was a silver dollar. Pictures of the event can be found on Facebook.

Some attendees tried out a couple of different Metal Detectors to see what they could learn about the newer Metal Detectors while looking for a new or upgrading Metal Detector of their own.

Thanks to Larry and his assistants, Peggy Higgins, and Rich Nesbit, for assisting the people who attended the outing.

Remember that the next GSMDC meetings are on August 19 and September 16, at 7 PM. See you at the Idaho Pizza Company in Meridian.

Thanks for your time.

Please fill out your IGPA applications mail them in and remember to put GSMDC in the bottom of the box on the top right of the front page. You do not have to hand them to Larry personally unless you miss his smiling face. He still has a few meteorites left, but they are still putting a strain on his desk at home and he would like the workspace back, to work on your membership applications and both club’s financial records.

Don’t forget the survey also, as these will help with identifying MD users and planning later outings.

Thanks for your time and patience.

Hello, all you Sand Scrubbing, Grass Probing, One Arm Longer than the other Detectorists!

As you all well know, the state and valley health leaders are still in a state of confusion, and that is causing a lot of problems with businesses who have eating/meeting places, the club would like to use. So, we are still in limbo, as to getting commitments from any place to use for the Clubs meetings.

Otherwise – NO ZOOM or FACE-TO-FACE MEETING THIS MONTH MARCH 2021!!!

Also, it is time to RENEW your membership in the Idaho Gold Prospectors Association (IGPA) and the Gem State Metal Detecting Club (GSMDC).

** Please print “GSMDC” at the bottom of the box on the top right side of the membership application form before you mail it. That way the Metal Detecting Club gets credit for your membership. **

A. The Raffle Director position has been filled by Peggy Higgins. She will be assisted by JoAnn Saunders. Thank you both for stepping up!!!

B. General Board Members, like President, Vice President, Activities Coordinator, and a few other fun and exciting jobs. You do not have to perform these jobs alone, so bring a friend and share the fun!

2. The leadership needs to know the membership’s needs and wants so please fill out the attached survey and send it in with your membership application or fill it out and send it back as a reply to this email, or you can also fill it out offline, scan it into your computer and send it to the GSMDC Gmail account, the one at the top of this email. The survey will greatly help with planning the upcoming club activities, making a better program for all members.

3. Think about places that may open for the Club to have meetings again and let the leaders know. This email account is the best way to contact the club leaders, so all of the ideas are in one place.

4. Second Reminder – For those of you who forgot to remove your batteries last fall, better get out your detector(s) and check the batteries for leaking and corrosion. Fixing your detector now instead of at the last minute when you want to use it, will save you a few headaches and cuss words later.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Hello, all you Cabin Fever Detectorists,

Here are some updates to what the club would like to do in the near future.

As you all well know, the state and valley is in stage 3, not good, not bad either, and looks to be moving in a positive direction as to passing through the Covid-19 illness and moving towards a normal life. It may take a few months yet, but we will get there. Saying that here are a few things the club leaders would like to try or do, and a couple of reminders also.

There will be a ZOOM video conference call meeting on Thursday, Feb 18th at 7 PM to update the club members on the planning for upcoming activities. The ZOOM meeting will be a trial to see if we can meet in the Cloud, as physical facilities may not be open for a while and we would like to get the club moving forward to having fun and easing the cabin fever in all of us.

Rich Nesbit will be the conference leader and is inviting you and your friends to attend on the 18th of February at 7 PM.
